14th annual Grape Escape cancelled because of outdated state liquor law

(Last Updated On: May 14, 2015)

One of Sacramento’s popular tourist events has been cancelled due to state regulations and fear tactics. According to a report by the Sacramento Business Journal, the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau had to cancel the Grape Escape wine event due to a state liquor law that is nearly 100 years old.

California prohibits wineries from donating wine to events that have a retailer’s name in it. Basically, since Save Mart Supermarkets sponsors the Grape Escape, the state says that wineries who participate in this Grape Escape event are breaking the law.

Typically, at least 40 wineries participate in this event, as it’s a very popular attraction in Sacramento. Thousands of people flock to Cesar Chavez Park for the outdoor wine party. But, after the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control warned the wineries about this antique law, most of them backed out of the event.
