California leads the way with most expensive travel destinations in America

(Last Updated On: May 10, 2015)

Earlier this week, a recent study was released examining 50 of America’s most popular tourist destinations. The goal was to see which cities were the most expensive and which were the least costly for travelers. According to GoBankingRates.com, California has three cities in the Top 10 most expensive travel destinations:

1. New York, New York
2. Santa Barbara, California
3. San Francisco, California
4. Jersey City, New Jersey
5. Honolulu, Hawaii
6. Charleston, South Carolina
7. Boston, Massachusetts
8. Los Angeles, California
9. Miami, Florida
10. Houston, Texas

California did not have any cities placed in the Top 10 cheapest travel destinations. In fact, one has to question some of the cities that are ranked in this portion. How many of you actually consider places like Detroit, Grand Rapids and Kansas City as tourist destinations?

Las Vegas was ranked number one on the list and it’s easy to see why. There’s always a great deal for travel and hotels in Vegas. I was there a few weeks ago, and the city is infested with tourists. Plus, if it costs less to travel and stay in Vegas, then the tourists can spend more money in Vegas. It’s really a brilliant philosophy.

1. Las Vegas, Nevada
2. Jacksonville, Florida
3. Orlando, Florida
4. Kansas City, Missouri
5. Detroit, Michigan
6. Albuquerque, New Mexico
7. Grand Rapids, Michigan
8. Salt Lake City, Utah
9. Memphis, Tennessee
10. Denver, Colorado

Despite being the 8th most expensive place to visit in America, Los Angeles raked in over $25 billion in tourist revenue for 2014. The Bay Area as a whole, raked in even more. So, the high costs aren’t scaring away the tourists. Both regions have iconic attractions and must-see destinations. One also has to factor in the large amount of business travel to these cities as well. As a whole, California brought in a record breaking $117 billion in tourist revenue for 2014.

GoBankingRates.com ranked the cities based on their affordability over a 5-day vacation. Additionally, it factored in the major components of travel like: airfare, ground transportation, hotel prices, food and drink costs.
