Labor Day is a bit later this year than in past years, but even so, millions of people are going to be traveling this long weekend by plane, train, and automobile for one last getaway of summer vacation. According to a report in The San Diego Union-Tribune, the Automobile Club of Southern California is predicting that San Diego is going to be the number one destination for Labor Day Weekend travelers in 2015, as it was in 2014, and approximately 2.5 million Southern California residents will go on trips.
Filomena Andre, the VP of travel products and services of the Automobile Club of S.C., said, “With Labor Day occurring on its latest possible date of Sept. 7, we were unlikely to see a huge increase in travel compared to last year because most schools will have been in session for at least a week. But dropping gas prices will give those who do travel some more flexibility in their getaway budgets.” Gas is sitting below $3 per gallon in many Southern California gas stations, but in San Diego County, prices are just shy of $3.49 a gallon. Overall, the average prices right now are still between 25 and 30 cents per gallon lower than they were at the same time in 2014.
Most of the estimated 2.5 million Southern California travelers will likely drive to their
vacation spots, about 2 million in total. Air travelers will make up about 347,000 of the travelers, and over 150,000 more will go by cruise, bus, or train. Overall, around 4 million California residents will hit the road, air, sea, and rails this weekend.
