Old Woman Mountains Preserve looks like a new woman after upgrades

(Last Updated On: May 15, 2015)

The Old Woman Mountains Preserve in San Bernardino County is more than just a Mojave Desert adventure, it’s also a region with historical and cultural ties to various Native American tribes. In 2002, the Native American Land Conservancy (NALC) purchased 2,560 acres in the Old Woman Mountains Wilderness in order to protect its cultural history and the historical landscape.

Over the years, the NALC and the Bureau of Land Management planned on making upgrades to trails and increase the efforts to preserve, protect and educate visitors of this region. According to a report by The Desert Sun, the first phase of this plan has been completed and this Old Woman looks new and improved.

A ceremonial blessing and tours of the Old Woman Mountains Preserve will be held on Saturday, May 23 from Noon to 4pm. It will be open to the public and a great experience for first time visitors.

The first phase of this two year project, improved the condition of the trails and also implemented more informational kiosks. So, not only will the trails be easier and safer to navigate, but visitors will also learn more about this Preserve.

The Old Woman Mountains Preserve is a small portion of the Old Woman Mountains Wilderness which is roughly 163,000 acres. Old Woman Peak is the highest point of the area at 5,300 feet. These mountains took their name from a granite monolith that some say resembles an old lady.

This project cost nearly a 1/2 million dollars with most of that coming from a grant. There are additional phases planned to continue these efforts. As of now, all parties involved are very pleased with how the first phased turned out.

Access to the wilderness area does require a 4wd vehicle. Rides to the ceremonial event can be provided but reservations must be made by May 18th. For more details and directions, check out the NALC official website.
