Typically, when heading out on a whale watching tour, attendees may see other creatures of the sea like a few dolphins. But, this whale watching tour was in for a rare treat as they witnessed a mega pod of at least 1,000 dolphins cruising along the coast of California. According to a report by the International Business Times, dolphin stampedes like this are a rarity and are indicative of “unusual behavior”.
Fortunately for all of us non-attendees of Dave’s Dolphin & Whale Safari, there’s a video of this cool dolphin stampede that took place earlier this week.
But, for those with a curious mind, like myself, the largest ever witnessed dolphin stampeding mega pod was in 2013 when a cruise ship captain saw an estimated 100,000 dolphins that spanned 5 miles wide.
The California coast is unlike anywhere else in the world. From migrating whales, to great white sharks and dolphin stampedes, you never know what amazing wildlife occurrences will be seen.
