California nabs one spot on Top 10 Beaches in America

(Last Updated On: May 21, 2015)

For the last 25 years, Professor Stephen Leatherman of Florida International University has compiled a Top 10 list of the best beaches in the United States. Through his efforts over the last quarter of a century, Professor Leatherman has earned the moniker of Dr. Beach. On Thursday, Dr. Beach released his Top 10 list for 2015. To nobody’s surprise, a Hawaiian beach topped the list. This makes 14 out of the last 25 years that a Hawaiian beach has earned the top spot. A California beach earned one spot, while Florida had four beaches in the top 10.

The 2015 edition of the Top 10 beaches in America is as follows:

  1. Waimanalo Bay Beach Park, Oahu, Hawaii
  2. Barefoot Beach, Bonita Springs, Florida
  3. St. George Island State Park, Florida
  4. Hamoa Beach, Maui, Hawaii
  5. Cape Hatteras, Outer Banks, North Carolina
  6. Cape Florida State Park, Key Biscayne, Florida
  7. Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
  8. Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, South Carolina
  9. Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park, Naples, Florida
  10. East Beach, Santa Barbara, California

Dr. Beach uses a grading system that consists of 50 different factors like: access, color and softness of sand, litter, urbanism and much more. Also, there is one major rule – the winning beached from previous years are excluded from the 2015 list. However, it appears that Professor Leatherman is going to consider removing that rule for 2016.

The following is the list of past winners, in alphabetical order, according to Dr.Beach.org:

  • Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin/Clearwater, Florida
  • Coopers Beach, Southampton, New York
  • Coronado Beach, San Diego, California
  • Duke Kahanamoku Beach, Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii
  • Fleming Park Beach, Maui, Hawaii
  • Fort De Soto Park, North Beach, St. Petersburg, Florida
  • Grayton Beach State Park, Florida panhandle
  • Hanalei Bay Beach, Kauai, Hawaii
  • Hanauma Bay, Oahu, Hawaii
  • Hapuna Beach State Recreational Area, Big Island, Hawaii
  • Hulopoe Beach, Lanai, Hawaii
  • Kaanapali, Maui, Hawaii
  • Kailua Beach Park, Oahu, Hawaii
  • Kapalua Bay Beach, Maui, Hawaii
  • Kaunaoa Beach, Big Island, Hawaii
  • Lanikai Beach, Oahu, Hawaii
  • Main Beach East Hampton, New York
  • Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach, Outer Banks of North Carolina
  • Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii
  • Siesta Beach, Sarasota, Florida
  • St. Andrews State Park, Florida panhandle
  • St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, Florida panhandle
  • Wailea Beach, Maui, Hawaii

Once again, California only nabbed one victory in 25 years. Looks like Hawaii has the most beautiful beaches followed by Florida.
