California Native Americans

Long before the arrival of Spanish explorers, Mexican settlers, and American pioneers, California was home to over 100 distinct tribes with a cultural diversity that featured more than 70 languages, countless dialects, and a deep knowledge of the vast geographical environments throughout the state.

 

Additionally, the story of California Indians is one filled with hardships, displacement, unimaginable tragedies, and survival. Yet, their incredible resiliency is a powerful testament to the human will and an inspiration to all.
