California pow wows are vibrant cultural gatherings that bring together Native American communities to celebrate tradition, dance, music, and heritage. Held throughout the year across the state, these events offer visitors a unique opportunity to experience living traditions while respectfully learning about Indigenous cultures.

Whether you’re looking for upcoming pow wows in California, planning your first visit, or simply curious about these powerful cultural events, this guide covers what to know before you go.

California Pow Wows: Quick Facts

  • Events are held throughout the year, with many taking place in spring, summer, and fall.
  • Most pow wows are open to the public.
  • Many feature traditional dancing, drumming, food, vendors, and art.
  • Events are hosted by tribes, universities, Native organizations, schools, and cultural groups.
  • The schedule below is organized statewide and by region.

What is a Pow Wow?

Pow Wows, also referred to as pow wow or pow-wow, are traditional Native American gatherings that center around dance, music, and communities. These events often include competitive dancing, drum groups, traditional foods, and artisan vendors, all while honoring Indigenous traditions and heritage.

Pow wows can be social, celebratory, or ceremonial, and each one reflects the traditions of the hosting tribe or organization. They are not the same thing as ceremonial sites or California Native American sacred sites, but the same respect and care should guide visitors who attend.

Upcoming California Pow Wows by Region

The regional lists below make the statewide schedule easier to scan by area. They can help you find events in Northern California, Central California, Southern California, the Bay Area, Sacramento, San Diego, Los Angeles, and the Inland Empire. Northern California Pow Wows (2026)

Northern California hosts a diverse mix of pow wows, from large university gatherings to tribal celebrations and cultural festivals. CSU Sacramento Pow Wow is listed for April 2026 with the exact date still TBD, while California Native American Day is scheduled for September 25, 2026, at the California State Capitol.

This is also a good region to connect with broader Northern California Native history, including the story of Chief Solano, the Suisun leader whose name remains tied to Solano County. His legacy also fits into the larger story of Native American statues in California and how Native leaders are remembered in public spaces across the state.

Sierra College and Auburn-Area Pow Wows

Sierra College Big Time is scheduled for April 11, 2026, in Rocklin. This event also helps serve readers looking for Auburn-area pow wows, since Rocklin, Auburn, and the Sierra foothills are part of the same broader regional travel corridor. If a dedicated Auburn pow wow date is announced for 2026, it should be added to the main schedule table.

For readers exploring more Native history connected to the Sierra Nevada and early California travel routes, Chief Truckee is another important figure to know.

Stanford and Bay Area Pow Wows

Stanford Spring Powwow is scheduled for May 8–10, 2026, at Stanford Eucalyptus Grove. It is one of the most recognizable Bay Area pow wows and helps answer readers looking for Stanford, Santa Clara, and Bay Area events.

BAAITS Two-Spirit Pow Wow in San Francisco and Marin Pow Wow in Kentfield also give Bay Area readers several early-season options. If you’re interested in more Bay Area Native history, the story of Coast Miwok leader Chief Marin adds helpful context to Marin County and the Indigenous history behind one of the region’s most familiar place names.

North Coast and Far Northern California Pow Wows

Cal Poly Humboldt California Indian Big Time & Social Gathering, Susanville Indian Rancheria Pow Wow, Yurok Tribe Salmon Festival, and CSU Chico Pow Wow help cover Northern California beyond the Bay Area and Sacramento Valley. These events are especially useful for readers looking for pow wows and Native cultural gatherings across the North Coast, northeastern California, and far northern parts of the state.

For travelers continuing beyond these events, far Northern California also has several protected landscapes tied to Indigenous history, including places covered in this guide to California national parks with Native American history.

How to Find the Next Pow Wow Near You in California

Pow wow schedules change throughout the year, and some events do not announce final dates until closer to the gathering. The schedule above is a good starting point, but it should not be the last place you check before making plans.

Before you travel, confirm the date, time, venue, parking, admission details, public access rules, and photo guidelines through the official event organizer. Tribal websites, university Native student organizations, official event pages, Native community organizations, and organizer social media pages are usually the best places to check for the latest updates.

When Is Pow Wow Season in California?

There is no single statewide pow wow season in California. Events happen throughout the year, but many California pow wows take place in spring, summer, and fall.

University-hosted pow wows are often held in spring, while many tribal and community gatherings take place during summer and early fall. Because each event follows its own schedule, always verify the current year’s dates before making plans.

What to Expect at a Pow Wow

If you’re attending your first pow wow, you’ll experience a rich blend of sights, sounds, and traditions.

  • Grand Entry: A ceremonial opening with dancers entering the arena.
  • Traditional Dancing: Including men’s, women’s, and youth categories.
  • Drum Groups: Live singing and drumming at the center of the event.
  • Vendor Booths: Selling handmade crafts, jewelry, and art.
  • Food Stalls: Offering Native dishes like fry bread and Indian tacos.

Pow Wow Etiquette: What You Should Know

  • Always listen to the Master of Ceremonies (MC).
  • Ask permission before taking photos of dancers.
  • Never touch regalia (traditional clothing).
  • Stand during honor songs if requested.
  • Be mindful that some dances are sacred, not performances.

Are Pow Wows Open to the Public?

Yes, most pow wows in California are open to the public and welcome visitors. However, some may include private or ceremonial portions that are not open to outsiders.

What Should You Wear to a Pow Wow?

Dress comfortably and respectfully. Start by checking the weather so you know how warm or cool it will be, especially if the event is outdoors or lasts into the evening.

Comfortable shoes are a good idea, especially for events with vendor areas, parking lots, grass fields, or fairground-style layouts. Avoid clothing with offensive, obscene, or culturally insensitive designs.

Plan Your Visit to a California Pow Wow

Attending a pow wow is one of the most meaningful ways to experience Native American culture in California. From powerful drumbeats to intricate regalia, these events offer a deep connection to traditions that continue to thrive today.

Before attending:

  • Check official event websites or social pages
  • Confirm dates and times
  • Review any visitor guidelines

By approaching with curiosity and respect, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for California’s Native American heritage.

FAQ: California Pow Wows

When Was The First California Pow Wow?

While, some sources say that the first Pow Wows began in the Great Plains in the early 19th century, other sources claim that the first intertribal Pow Wow was held in Oklahoma in 1879.

As for Pow Wows in California, the first ever recognized Pow Wow in this state may be lost to history. Digging through historical resources didn’t provide much clarity on California Pow Wows until the years of 1915 to 1923. During that timeframe, we find multiple articles reporting Pow Wows in various locations like Monterey and Sacramento.

The UC Davis Pow Wow first began in 1969. As a former student in the UC Davis Native American Studies program, I’ve attended this Pow Wow a number of times along with dozens of other powwows throughout the state.

What does Pow Wow mean?

The term “pow wow” is said to have derived from the Algonquin language. More specifically, it comes from the Narragansett word for powwaw. There are a few variants of this term that also includes pawaw, pawau, pauwau, and powah.

Most sources translate powwaw to mean “spiritual leader.” Some translate it to mean “he dreams” or “he who dream” with both of these being associated with medicine men.

What is the purpose of a pow wow?

Pow wows celebrate Native American culture through dance, music, and community gatherings.

Can non-Native people attend pow wows?

Yes, many pow wows are open to the public and welcome respectful visitors.

Can you take pictures at a pow wow?

Sometimes. Always ask permission and follow announcements from the MC.

How long do pow wows last?

They can last from a single day to an entire weekend.

Where is the next pow wow in California?

The next pow wow depends on the current date and the event organizer’s confirmed schedule. Use the 2026 schedule above, then check the official event source before traveling.
